Mississippi, the iconic Southern state that sits along the Mississippi River, is home to the city of Jackson. As the state's capital and largest city, Jackson boasts approximately 173,000 people. Prior to colonial settlements, the region that is now a modern day city was the home of the Choctaw Nation Indians. Bands of these Native American communities still reside in areas throughout the state, especially northeast of Jackson in Choctaw.

Mississippi Children's Museum

Families looking to give their children an educational and fun experience will love the Mississippi Children's Museum. Open six days a week, the museum is free for children under the age of one and members can enter the museum as often as they'd like. Key exhibits include the "World at Work Gallery," "Healthy Fun Gallery," "Exploring Mississippi Gallery," "Wild About Reading Gallery," "Express Yourself Gallery," and "The Literacy Garden." The Literacy Garden aims to make reading fun and lets kids take a deeper look into some of the elements of language, including letters, parts of speech, and sound. They'll get a chance to practice their reading, so that in the future, they'll be able to tell their own stories.

The museum also offers summer camps, annual events, and regular programs aimed at enriching the lives of young children. Want to celebrate a birthday party? The museum offers packages that include free parking, postcard invitations for any guests, museum admission, access to a party space, balloons, and a special t-shirt for the birthday child of honor. Exciting theme options are also available! The pirate package features party favors catered for the seafarer. The "Museum Discovery Party" lets young sleuths scamper around the museum to conduct an intriguing scavenger hunt. At the end, the winner will receive a prize.

Medgar Evers Home

Medgar Evers, a Mississippi native, was known for his relentlessness work towards advancing civil rights for African Americans during the tumultuous decades of the 1950s and 1960s. He was the NAACP's first full time state field secretary. His work focused on the politicization of key data on civil rights violations. A white supremacist assassinated Medgar Evers within the driveway of his own home. Visitors can pass by his home, which is located at 2332 Margaret Walker Alexander Drive. Movies have been made about his life, and you can find some of the props inside of Medgar Evers' historical home.

Jackson Zoo

Situated in Livingston Park, this zoo is one of the largest in the state, and it is officially accredited by the Associated of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The African Rainforest is one of the zoo's most popular exhibits. It includes a pool with pygmy hippos, an island of chimpanzees, red river hogs, rock hyraxes, white rhinos, colobus monkeys, Diana monkeys, and more. The Wilderness Mississippi is an exhibit with a distinctly local flavor. It includes black bears, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes. These are meant to represent some of the natural wildlife that find a home right in Mississippi.

The City's University

Since 1877, JSU has been a home to the pursuit of academic excellence. It was the first university in Mississippi to establish a School of Public Health. The university has schools for business, education, liberal arts, media, journalism, public service, and science. In fact, Apple has recognized the school as one that has successfully integrated technology into the educational curriculum. Sports teams have also tapped into the school for talented players, including Lindsey Hunter, who won a championship with the Lakers in 2004.
