Visiting Vancouver

The New York Times called Vancouver "Manhattan with mountains...equal parts India, China, England, France, and the Pacific Northwest".  That's a glowing statement, but most everyone who visits the city agrees with it.  Not only is it a living postcard scene, it's teeming with culture, a modern nightlife, and year-round activities for the outdoor lover.

Quintessential Vancouver

This city is popular for a number of reasons, but when you ask locals to name their favorite  must-see sites for tourists, these are the three they'll tell you to do.

Grouse Grind: The Grouse Grind is a trail that snakes its way up (straight up) the side of Grouse Mountain.  It's a total of 2.9 kilometers one way, and it's fondly known by locals as Mother Nature's Stairmaster.  This is a challenging trail, and it isn't suitable for very out of shape people or kids.  You gain 2800 feet of elevation in 1.8 miles and climb 2830 stairs to do so.  Hardcore locals buy a Grind Chip so they can compete against themselves and others to see how swiftly they make the climb.

For the less physically inclined, you can take the Super Skyride Aerial Tramway, or if your quads are completely cooked once you're at the top, you can also take the tramway down the mountain.  Everyone who's survived the Grind agrees wholeheartedly that the summit is always worth the sweat and tears.  You're greeted with one of the city's best and most illustrious views of the skyline and the surrounding ocean.

Granville Island: Granville Island is a sweet little island just a short jaunt from downtown.  You feel like you're having a bit of a getaway when you set foot on the island.  You forget about the metro feel of the nearby city and embrace the small-town atmosphere Granville can't help but exude.  The artsy community on the island makes the community come alive in the form of art studios, unique boutiques, waterfront restaurants, and their iconic fresh food market.

The public market should be on every visitor's  To-Do List.  Aisles upon aisles of locally sourced baked goods, cheeses, produce, and fresh seafood are there for the taking in colorful but rustic displays.  As you're sneaking tastes of your sneakily-purchased baked goodies, haul the kids over to the Kids Market for the Water Park, the indoor Adventure Zone (perfect for rainy spring days), and live turtles.

If you're lucky enough to be on an adults-only trip, it would be practically sinful to skip the Granville Island Brewing Co., British Columbia's very first cottage brewery.  The brewery's atmosphere mimics that of a dark-walled pub in a Scottish fishing village, but the crowd is an even mix of young locals and dignified older sorts.

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park: You can't leave without going to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park.  The suspension bridge teeters 70 meters above the Capilano River, and it's natural bounce gives you a heady sense of excitement.  The entire park is nestled in the British Columbia rainforest with cedar and evergreen trees filling the air with their earthy scent and housing various species of animals.

The suspension bridge is the main reason visitors enter the park, but through the years, more attractions have been added to keep up with tourism.  The Cliffwalk is a series of suspended catwalks attached to the granite cliff face above the Capilano River.  It isn't recommended for the claustrophobic or those sensitive to heights because there are sections where the bottom of the walkway is nothing but plexiglass, and the entire walkway system is only supported by 16 anchors into the cliffside.

The Treetops Adventure is a maze of wooden suspension bridges connected to eight centuries old Douglas Fir trees.  If you've ever wanted to experience the forest from 110-feet above ground, this is your place!  This attraction is especially popular with kids and the park has a dedicated Kids' Rainforest Explorer Program.

Vancouver is rich in culture, organic beauty, and more things to do than you can shake a stick at.  Whether you're there to explore, eat, or immerse yourself in the city's variety of cultures, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to see and do everything you want.
