Woodrow Wilson Boyhood Home
Explore the place where our 28th President grew up when you visit the boyhood home of Woodrow Wilson. Located in the downtown historic district of the city, this two-story brick mansion has been turned into a museum and listed as a National Historic Landmark. The home was originally built in 1859 and in 1860 it was sold to the First Presbyterian Church to become the church parsonage. The first one to live in the parsonage would be the Rev. Dr. Joseph Ruggles Wilson. Woodrow's father and mother would reside in the mansion for the next eleven years.
The mansion provides group tours Thursday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm and lasts for approximately 45 minutes. The museum is also available for rental for special events like weddings and birthdays. The museum also has a shop available with books, prints and specialty items available for purchase. There are also photographs available of the family.
Enjoy the scenic banks of the Savannah River when you experience the Riverwalk. Following along the downtown district of the city, the Riverwalk is lined with shade trees and a park setting while you stroll along the side of the historic river. The Riverwalk was opened in 1986 and was partially designed to devise an answer to flooding problems in the area. The city built a dam and levee system to control the waterway along with the Riverwalk to offer a park atmosphere to the residents.
The Riverwalk is also the place where many special events take place throughout the year, including fireworks, candlelight jazz concerts, movies on the common and the annual 5K shelter run. If you're looking for a place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the city, take a soothing stroll along the Riverwalk.
