The History of San Diego

A Little Bit of San Diego’s History

Did you know that San Diego is one of the oldest settlements on the American territory? Namely, the Kumeyaay people were the sole inhabitants of the area in and around of modern San Diego for more than 10,000 years before the first people that were not of this origin ever visited the area. The first non-Kumeyaay people to visit the area were the Spanish, namely an explorer of Portuguese origin who claimed the area for the Spanish Empire in 1542. However, the San Diego area was under official jurisdiction of the Spanish Empire from 1769 to 1821 for the first time. Later on, from 1821 to 1823 the city was under the First Mexican Empire; from 1823 to 1848 under the United Mexican States; and from 1848 till today, San Diego has been a part of the United States of America.

San Diego and the World War II

There were many defense manufacturers in San Diego during the WWII, so San Diego became a major center of defense in this period, and it also flourished as a city. Between 1930 and 1950, the population of the city rose from 150,000 to 334,000.

San Diego is a major city today because its history shaped the city in this way. Therefore, when visiting San Diego, you should know that this city is a city with rich and colorful history.
