Verdant Gardens

Olbrich Botanical Gardens feature 16 acres of wondrous landscapes and exotic plants, birds, and orchids. One unique segment of the gardens is the inclusion of a "Sala." This open pavilion is native to Thailand and was gifted to the University of Wisconsin-Madison by the government of Thailand. In fact, only four such Sala exist outside of Thailand across the world! The University of Wisconsin also has an arboretum in the area, which has a number of trails to explore. It's the perfect spot for a morning run and there are different options for people of various fitness levels.

The Universities of Wisconsin

The The University of Wisconsin is a massive school that features upwards of 40,000 students. Its Division I NCAA teams are prominent members of the Big Ten Conference, including college football, men's basketball, and women's basketball. From the years 1999 up until 2015, the Badgers have made 17 consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament. Several current NBA players emerged from the program, including Sam Dekker, Devin Harris, Frank Kaminsky, and Jon Leuer. Additional schools in the city include Edgewood College, Madison Area Technical College, and Madison Media Institute, which gives the city a total of roughly 50,000 students. One particularly noteworthy point is Madison's penchant for doctorates. According to Forbes magazine in 2003, the city had the highest number of Ph.D.s per capita in the United States!

 The Capitol

The Capitol Building is an architectural wonder, and visitors can take advantage of the daily tours that are offered to learn more. The dome of the building reaches up to 265 feet. The mural constructed by Mr. Edwin Blashfield, entitled "Resources of Wisconsin," covers the interior dome of the rotunda area. Tours are given seven days a week, with limited hours on Sunday. Capitol Square is a scenic area that serves as a place for families to stroll by. A nearby farmers market is accessible in the spring, summer and fall. This market is among the largest in the entire country, and serves a wide variety of products including flowers, organic fruits and vegetables, baked goods, cheese, jam, and much more. Visitors can choose from specialty items like exotic mushrooms, various types of garlic, eggs, biscotti, and pies. There are food carts that prepare full meals as well.

The Henry Vilas Zoo

Madison's public zoo covers 28 acres, hosts approximately 750,000 visitors a year, and can be attended without any admission fee. The zoo has been functioning since the year 1911 and is currently undergoing a $27 million redevelopment, which will lead to the construction of an Arctic Passage exhibit and an enhanced Children's Zoo. A section for grizzly bears and polar bears was recently constructed. Key exhibits include the Tropical Rainforest Aviary, Discovery Center, North American Prairie, and the Animal Health Center. Children and families will be excited to see African lions, green anacondas, prairie dogs, red pandas, goats, and aardvarks. Runners will love the Zoo Run, which is a 5K-10K race that goes through the zoo, as well as the neighboring Arboretum operated by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The arboretum features lush natural landscapes including prairies, savanna,s deciduous forests, conifer forests, and wetlands. Thousands of plant species are represented in the arboretum, including reed canary grass, white oaks, black oaks, beech trees, sugar maple trees, and bluestem grass.
