The town was named in honor of Dan Thornton, a former Colorado governor. And until 1953, the town was comprised mostly of farmland. It was then that Sam Hoffman bought a lot off of Washington Street. The lot was located approximately seven miles (11 km) north of Denver. Moreover, the town was the first totally planned community in Adams County that offered various municipal services like free garbage pick-up and a single tax levy. In 1954, the Thornton Community Association (TCA) was founded in order to support the new community's expansion. In fact, the TCA helped the town become an incorporated city in 1956.

If you like greenery, hiking and the outdoors, this amazing town has it all. Thornton has about 2,000 acres of park and open area with a total of 81 city parks. In addition, there are more than 80 miles (130 km) of trails that embrace the entire city.

Thornton’s Arts and Culture Division is responsible for numerous City programs like concerts, art exhibits and Funtaztikidz. In addition, the city is home to a diversity of classes and performances. There is a huge calendar of events at the Funtaztikidz like LEGO workshops, theater and more.
