A Brief History

The town was named in honor of Dan Thornton, a former Colorado governor. And until 1953, the town was comprised mostly of farmland. It was then that Sam Hoffman bought a lot off of Washington Street. The lot was located approximately seven miles (11 km) north of Denver. Moreover, the town was the first totally planned community in Adams County that offered various municipal services like free garbage pick-up and a single tax levy. In 1954, the Thornton Community Association (TCA) was founded in order to support the new community's expansion. In fact, the TCA helped the town become an incorporated city in 1956.
