Below are our favorite suburbs in Boston and which hidden gems we think you should try.
Somerville
Distance from Boston: 5 Miles
Head to Somerville for for a fun and family-oriented getaway. It has plenty of activities that are great for groups, including the LEGO® Discovery Center Boston in our featured hidden gem, the Assembly Square area. A neighborhood that showcases a mix of old and new, the previously used industrial space now features a cinema, a marina, shopping and dining destinations, and seasonal events for everybody. Parking can be tight here, so you can either take the MBTA Orange Line at Assembly station or book a charter bus in Somerville with more flexible scheduling and amenities.
Brookline
Distance from Boston: 7 Miles
The suburb of Brookline is rich in history, famous for being the hometown of John F. Kennedy. Two of our favorite historic sites to visit are the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site, home of famed architect who designed Central Park and countless other urban parks, and the John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site, childhood home of the 35th president. Brookline is a great area to visit if you are looking for an educational field trip outing or have an American history buff in the family. If you plan on visiting the latter with a group, be sure to book your Brookline charter bus during a time when it’s open—the site has seasonal hours which are listed on its website.
Malden
Distance from Boston: 7 Miles
The comically named Boda Bing Boston earned its place on our list due to its immersive and unique group adventure experienced for all ages. The experiences are called Quests, and feature everything from solving the riddles of the Sphinx to getting behind what’s happening in Area 51. It’s a great outing for groups of all sizes, so feel free to get in touch with us to see about booking a charter bus in Malden to serve as field trip transportation or corporate transportation for your first outing there—we would be happy to help!
Watertown
Distance from Boston: 9 Miles
Those who love unique museums will want to pay Watertown, Massachusetts a visit. The Armenian Museum of America in Watertown has the largest collection of Armenian artifacts in North America, with around 14 different exhibits annually along with live performances that pay tribute to Armenian heritage. After you’re done checking that out, make sure your Watertown charter bus stops at The Plumbing Museum. Though temporarily closed at the time of writing, it plans to reopen and is a unique museum dedicated to educating people about work in the trades.
Newton
Distance from Boston: 10 Miles
The charming Boston suburb of Newton is known for its many beautiful parks, so those who love the outdoors will feel right at home. Our favorite hidden gem here is the Newton Cemetery & Arboretum. More than just a resting place for loved ones, the grounds offer serene and landscaped views of thousands of flowers, hundreds of trees, and a lake. The cemetery also hosts events throughout the year like horticultural tours, cleanup volunteer opportunities, and tree sponsorships.
Needham
Distance from Boston: 16 Miles
In addition to being known as a growing industrial and technology hub, Needham has many beautiful trails and parks along with a theater and cultural scene. Our first hidden gem in this suburb includes the Cutler Park Reservation, which features the largest freshwater marsh on the middle Charles River. Your charter bus driver can park your Needham charter bus for free on site if you decide to visit with a group. Another noteworthy hidden gem is the Arlekin Players Theatre, a theatre composed of immigrants who perform shows in both English and Russian and aim to bridge the gaps between cultures.
Arlington
Distance from Boston: 9 Miles
Those interested in niche history will love visiting the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum. This hidden gem has more than 90 pieces of artwork spanning the sixty-year career of Cyrus Dallin, a sculptor and indigenous rights activist. The museum is unique but small, so be sure to leave space on your Arlington charter bus itinerary for other stops in the area, too. We recommend catching a play at Arlington Friends of the Drama, a theater inside a beautiful converted church, and finding something to read at the Robbins Library, a public library with stunning vaulted ceilings and artwork from local artists.
Quincy
Distance from Boston: 10 Miles
Like other suburbs in Boston, Quincy is rich in American history and is also the birthplace of two other U.S. presidents: John Adams and John Quincy Adams. You can visit their homes at the Adams National Historic Site, which is our first hidden gem on the list. The nine-acre site has 11 different buildings and offers guided tours along with a junior ranger program. After you’re done touring the historical site, hop in your Quincy charter bus and head to Marina Bay during the nighttime. The area has tons of dining and nightlife opportunities and is a great way to end your group trip to this charming suburb.
