Attractions

The center of the city is Temple Square which is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints but is open to the public. Attracting almost five million visitors a year, it is more popular than any of the National Parks in Utah. The Square features the immense Gothic Assembly hall and the Mormon Tabernacle. If the opportunity presents itself, performances by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir are a memorable experience whatever your musical taste. Their holiday concerts are world famous and free public rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings at Assembly hall. Many of the city attractions are nearby to Temple Square. Located just west of the Square is the Family History Library which is the largest genealogical library in the world and is open to the general public. Also west of Temple Square is the Clark Planetarium, which includes an IMAX theater and children's museum. The Leonardo was opened downtown in 2011 and creates a fusion of art and technology. North of Temple Square is the Utah State Capital. This neoclassical granite structure was built in 1916 and extensively renovated over the last decade. Also on the western edge of downtown is the Rio Grande Depot, a former train station that now serves as the Rio Gallery. The University of Utah lies on the eastern side of the city and offers many cultural and spectator sporting events. The University of Utah campus is home to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts as well as the Natural History Museum of Utah. Just southeast of the university is the city’s Hogle Zoo.

Recreation

Salt Lake City sits smack dab in some of the most spectacular and pristine landscape on the continent. Skiing and snowboarding are less than an hour away in the Wasatch Mountains east of the university. Home of the 2002 Winter Olympics, the city is in easy reach of eight world-class ski resorts. Ensign Peak Park is a local preserve that provides excellent views of the city. The Great Salt Lake has a state beach on the southern tip which also is a popular concert venue. The city also takes pride in creating numerous green areas within the city limits. Liberty Park sits in the central downtown and is a popular oasis among the city workers and tourist. The park also includes the Tracy Aviary, which includes over 150 species of birds, and the Isaac Chase folk museum. Red Butte Gardens and Arboretum sits on the east side of the University of Utah next to the Natural History Museum. The 100-acre gardens also include hiking trails and an amphitheater, which is a popular spot for summer concerts. The city also offers a wide array of spectator sports. The Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association plays their home games at the Vivint Smart Arena and the Real Salt Lake plays professional soccer at the Rino Tito Stadium. The city also has minor league baseball and hockey. The Utah Utes plays Division 1-A athletics as members of the Pacific 12 conference and the Utah–BYU football game known as the "Holy War" among locals is one of the biggest sporting events of the year.

Restaurants and Nightlife

As the state capital, Salt Lake City has a knack for entertaining visitors in town for business or pleasure. Sugar House in southeastern Salt Lake City, has a reputation for more of an edgy night scene and an eclectic collection of niche shops. Another popular destination for nighttime fun has evolved around the City Creek Center just a few blocks south of Temple Square. The 20-acre Center is a mixed-use greenway in downtown and sits right on TRAX light rail system. The area just west of the university also has a popular bar scene during the school year. The city has a lively performing arts community attracting many traveling Broadway shows and music performers from around the world. There are also a number of local theater groups active in the city. The Historic Capitol Theater downtown is the chief venue for visiting artists. Abravanel Hall plays host to the city’s symphony and opera.
