In 2013, Yahoo Travel cited our Arboretum as a "must-see garden" among its "10 Glorious Gardens to Explore." KC Parent Magazine has featured the Children's Farmstead as a favorite day trip. Have we piqued your interest in Overland Park attractions? Here's an overview of the old-time charm that awaits you!
This makes for a fun bus stop! For over 30 years, the Farmers' Market has been providing us with fresh local food. We'll drop you off at Marty Street, where you'll find flavorful produce, preserves, and baked goods. Pick up a specialty item. You'll also become acquainted with our friendly residents. Some days feature live music concerts. The Farmers' Market is open Saturdays, April 9 through November 9, 8am-1pm, and Wednesdays, May 18 through September 28, 7:30am-1pm. Leave with a Kansas souvenir in hand!
At Overland Park Arboretum, you can stroll five miles of trails through themed gardens. You'll be enchanted by dancing butterflies, waterfalls, wildflowers, and murmuring brooks. In the Train Garden, see model trains meander through a mini-village. Kids love the Children's Discovery Garden! Highlights are a shrinking tunnel, fossil dig, grass maze, and puppet theater. Soak in the serenity of the Monet Garden. Fourteen statues are set among willow trees, ponds, and colorful blooms. End a delightful day at the Arboretum Cafe, serving scrumptious food. The arboretum is open mid-April through September, 8am-7:30pm daily, and 8am-5pm the rest of the year.
The Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead honors a beloved local policewoman killed in the line of duty. Designed as a family attraction, the grounds include a dairy barn, farm animals, nature trail, gardens, country schoolhouse, and Indian encampment. Children will especially enjoy the pony rides, mining, and feeding the baby goats! The farm is open April through October, 9am-5pm daily, and during summer, Tuesday and Thursday, from 9am-8pm. One-hour tours are offered for groups of 20-30 people, including a wagon ride and animal feeding. Reservations are required, which can be made by calling 913-897-2360.
At the Museum at Prairiefire, you'll see engaging rotating exhibits, loaned from New York's American Museum of Natural History. Permanent exhibits pay tribute to Kansas geology, history, and scientific achievements. Children can play in the Discovery Room, with displays on microscopes and science subjects. Exciting activities teach about Earth and the universe. Special programs are held year-round. On first and third Fridays at 6pm, Science Happy Hour is an informal presentation by a scientist. Ask the expert questions while enjoying a beverage and appetizers. Other programs targeting children are the Little Explorers Club, JAM Session, and Paleontology Rocks. For adults, health-related programs are offered monthly. The museum is open Monday-Saturday from 10am-5pm and Sunday from 12pm-5pm.
At the Culinary Center of Kansas City, members of your group can take individual classes or gather for a private event. Relish the fruits of your labors at sit-down lunches or dinners. For those who prefer to observe, demonstrations and limited hands-on classes are offered, along with savory tastings. Themed menus comprise Cooking for Health, Confectionery Arts, and Midwest Barbecue classes. The Center is modern and spacious! The immaculate facility includes two teaching kitchens and an event venue. Consider reserving a cooking party, reception, or catered meal. See the variety of group events hosted here.
